Top 10 Goal Setting Tips
Tip 6 - Embed Your Goals

The 6th of my goal setting tips is to embed your goals. This means bombarding your conscious and subconscious mindswith consistent and persistent messages about the goal you want to (and will) achieve. The more you embed your goals by doing this this, the stronger the urge will be for your subconscious mind to close the gap between reality and desire and go and get that goal for you. Embedding your goals is one of my favourite goal setting tips as it's easy and fun. There are a number of approaches you can take - I suggest you do ALL OF THEM:

Write It Down

Research has shown that people who write their goals down are more likely to achieve them than those who don't. In fact a study conducted at Harvard University followed up students 20 years after they had graduated and foundthat 95% of those who had written down their life goals had actually achieved them! Considering it only takes a couple of minutes to embed your goals in this way (and it's free!) this action gives you a massive return. Sodo it now!

Once you've written your goal down, place it somewhere prominent where you will see it frequently during thecourse of each and every day. I have my goal for my Women's Health Coaching business 12 months from now written on a poster on a wall in front of my desk. It's to the left of my computer screen, so it is always in my peripheral vision when I'm sat there.

You can come up with your own ideas on where you'd like to place your goal; perhaps make a small laminated card with your goal written on it. You could place this in your wallet/purse, or your diary, or the dashboard of your car, or use it as a bookmark if you are an avid daily reader. You could place post-it notes around your home e.g. on the door of the refridgerator, inside cupboard doors, on your bathroom mirror so you see it 1st thing in the morning and last thing at night. Do whatever works for you and have some fun with it!

Make a Picture

The subconscious mind responds very well to all the senses, especially 'seeing'. As well as seeing your goal written in words, the impact will be greater if you create a picture of your goal and also place this in a very visible place where you will see it several times a day.

You might like to draw or paint a picture of yourself. You don't have to be a fantastic artist to do this. I sometimes draw pictures with little stick people and very amateurish doodles - the point is, I know what it represents and my minds respond to that. Alternatively you could cut something out of a magazine or print an image off the internet.

I like the idea of creating a 'vision board' which is something I heard about through the Law of Attraction. Have a notice board somewhere in your home where you pass frequently (office, kitchen, hallway). Pin up pictures of the various goals you are working towards at the moment in your life. You might like to combine this with also writing those goals and pinning them on the board too. Whatever works for you!

Affirmations

Another sense that the subconscious mind responds to is 'hearing'. All of us have internal chatter or 'self-talk'going on that affects the extent to which we are successful in our endeavours (or not!). Positive daily affirmations are a way of crowding out any negative self-talk or self limiting beliefs that we may have been listening too and replaces them with purely positive ones.

This goal embedding techniques is most successful if you create your own affirmation, write them down and then say them out load to yourself repeatedly several times a day. Click on Positive daily affirmations to find out how to do this.

Act As If

One of the greatest strategies for success is to act as if you are already where you want to be. This means thinking like, talking like, dressing like, acting like and feeling like the person who has already achieved your goal. Acting as if sends powerful commands to your subconscious mind to find creative ways to achieve your goal.

Let's imagine your goal is to be a slimmer, fitter person for whom regular exercise and a healthy diet is an important and enjoyable part of your lifestyle. Imagine you are that person right now. How do you think you will be feeling? Happy, energetic, successful, more confident perhaps? How does someone who feels those things move? Upright posture, with a spring in their step? How do they look? Bright eyes, smiling, relaxed, well groomed? Are you getting the picture?

And of course, a slim, healthy, fit person will be taking exercise regularly (and enjoying it) and they'll be eating delicious, healthy, balanced meals (and enjoying them). So why don't you start too? The proper order of things is to:

1) Start now and BE who you want to be
2) Then DO the actions that go along with being that person
3) Finally, discover that you will soon HAVE those things you want in your life
