Top 10 Goal Setting Tips
Tip 5 - Believe It's Possible!

The 5th of my goal setting tips is for you to allow yourself to believe it's possible that you can achieve your goal.

In my experience the biggest barrier that any of us face in terms of achieving health and wellbeing goals (or any life goals in fact) is ourselves and what we believe we are (or are not) capable of. If you were to let go of all your limiting beliefs and allow yourself to achieve what you truly are capable of, you would almost certainly astound yourself. And people do, every day.

Henry Ford is quoted as saying, "If you think you can or you think you can't, you're probably right!" In other words the outcome you achieve is often directly in line with your expectations. For example, if you believe you can't stop smoking, then you probably won't - at least not permanently. But if you believe it's POSSIBLE that you could stop smoking, then you start to become more open to the idea and the different ways and means by which you can achieve this goal.

Did you ever hear someone say, "I never thought it was possible" after they have achieved something important?Oh yes they did! What they actually mean is that there was a time once when they did not believe it was possible, but something happened, some little doubt or chink of light crept in and they started to believe thatit (whatever IT was) COULD happen and that's when the change began.

So often when I'm coaching people I hear clients say, "I just CAN'T!" or, "I could NEVER do that!". CAN'T is a 4-letter word I'd advise you to stop using right now. The reason I say this is that we condition ourselvesand our beliefs by the language we use - in other words what we say to ourselves. You probably haven't even noticed that you've been doing it, so now I'd like you to start noticing.

What are you saying or thinking to yourself about your ability to do something? If it's not positive then change it to something that is. What are other people saying that you are listening or not listening to? Do you ever find yourself disagreeing with people who pay you compliments and give you positive feedback? Do you ever take on board negative beliefs about what others believe they are or are not capable of? Or worse still, what they think you are incapable of?

Become aware of how your thoughts and others' opinions have shaped and are shaping your beliefs, and choose to take on board only those that will assist you in achieving your goal. You might be thinking, "yeah, but youcan't change beliefs just like that!" Well actually you can...that's by belief and it serves me well!

OK, I agree of all my goal setting tips, this one is probably the trickiest to do, so here are some things that will help you:

1) Decide to choose your own belief sets - just do it! Let go of the can'ts, couldn'ts, wouldn'ts, and shouldn'ts!

2) Work through this belief changing exercise to question and crush negative beliefs

3) Create and state your own positive daily affirmations to help you install new enabling beliefs
